Cherry Pick: Sharron Kraus

by Frank Gualtier -- 09/18/07
Sharron Kraus
S
inger songwriter Sharron Kraus's voice is like liquid that bubbles and warbles it's way up and down through songs that are by my reckoning muchly like bare'ish noir roots music with it's tail still halfway into Ireland.

She's got three songs available to freely download as of this writing.

- Bruton Town
- On the Chase
- Uncle Rat

I recommend starting with On The Chase.

If dark folk lights your fire you'll warm straight away to Sharon Kraus.

Get 'em while you can and fall yourself in love with this music.

Bat For Lashes - Fur and Gold

by Frank Gualtier -- 09/17/07, 09/18/07

Fur and Gold
T
he LP Fur and Gold, released between 2006 and 2007 (UK-Europe to US), by Bat For Lashes (aka Natasha Khan) strikes me more as an experience than an album.

Largely 60's-70's era based arrangements provide environment for witty mini epics like Horse & I and Trophy, the anti-ballad What's A Girl To Do?, a warning of ways in Seal Jubilee, dream sequence-like tales such as I Saw A Light, a cover of Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire and much more.

Her early soul influence shines in the exquisitely dark Sarah, a song possibly stolen from Berry Gordy's X vault of 'WHOAtown' - the top secret just in case this other shit don't fly tainted space recordings. With words like "Chewing fingernails in her shit-eating grin" and "They cut out her heart when she was a little girl" enveloped in a pure motown sound this doll is so wrong she's right.

Her voice is unique for the most part but at times she does sound a fair bit like Bjork.

On the whole the claim is that much of what she writes is fairy tale inspired. I won't argue that but for the studious there's an entire universe of innuendo and double entendre going on in subtext. I could be wrong[1] but it's worth asking yourself exactly who The Wizard is next time you run off to shoot a lion.

When you listen to this album, and I strongly urge you to do so, be sure to give it your full ear because you're quite probably hearing the musical equivalent of an Einstein:Shakespeare mashup from a long lost angst filled mystic who's watch was stopped some forty odd years ago by an inner child playing games.

Natasha Khan's genius runs deep.

Fur and Gold is an an experience you'll be glad to have had and a prize album for any collection even remotely within earshot of rock, pop or folk.

Cherry Vid - The Rain by Lou Rhodes

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/28/07

Lou RhodesThis is the new video from former Lamb singer/songwriter Lou Rhodes for her song The Rain.

It's from her forthcoming album Bloom due out next month (Sept '07).

She's pretty endearing just as a person let alone a prolific artist - here's a quote from her bio for Bloom:

“Sometimes I think, ‘My God, I keep writing all these love songs,” and I really struggle with that,” she confesses. “I think I’m a bit of an emotional junkie, you know? It seems to be what consumes me. The heart never ceases to provide me with subject matter. I don’t know why that is. Someone asked me the other day, ‘Are you in love with being in love?’ And I couldn’t really answer that question.”

Hope you enjoy this video and Lou Rhodes as much I do.

Cherry Vid - What's a Girl To Do by Bat for Lashes

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/22/07

Natasha KhanI only found out yesterday about Bat for Lashes while reading the myspace blog of lotte kestner, a solo project of Trespassers William Anna-Lynne Williams.

Upon investigating I ran across this amazing video for the song What's a Girl To Do.

First thought: "Anna-Lynne you hear as good as you sound..."

The song is from the album Fur & Gold which was released between Sept '06 and July of '07.

If you read the Bat for Lashes bio and check out this simple yet incredible video and song we'll be of equal footing.

The brainchild of Natasha Khan, Bat for Lashes is worthy of attention.

I certainly plan on staying in tune.

Cherry Vid - Buttons by Sia

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/21/07

SiaYesterday I ran across this and I haven't stopped laughing yet.

This is a promotional video for the song Buttons from Sia's upcoming album 'Some People Have Real Problems' slated to drop by year's end.

Buttons by Sia
you caught me pushing imaginary buttons
(step away from me lover, away from me lover)
you caught me counting imaginary school-children
(get away from me lover, away from me lover)
yes, i can see that your carpet is animated
(walk away from me lover, away from me lover)
yes, i see open wounds in everyone i dated
(away from me lover, get away from me lover)

i am no good for you
i'm seeing ghosts in everything i do

you caught me turning all the lights on and off
(walk away from me lover, away from me lover)
when will you see that i am carrying this stuff?
(walk away from me lover, away from me lover)
can't you see that i am losing my marbles?
it's marvelous, losing another, losing another

i am no good for you
i'm seeing ghosts in everything i do

Thea Gilmore - Chords - Avalanche

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/19/07

Thea Gilmore

Thea Gilmore's 2003 album 'Avalanche' combines her often minimalistic tendencies with just enough engineering to appeal to mainstream.

In it's entirety the album is one of her best works and the title track 'Avalanche', as with her complete songbook, epitomizes her mastery of poetic pros.

This is a summary version (w/out all the notes) of my original transcription which I posted to ultimate-guitar.com back in March of '06.

Am F C G (2 times)

Am
Three PM
F
Blue as a roadsign
C
With a bag and some cheap wine
G
The suns in my eyes
Am
Between
F
The smoke trails of aircraft

The kite tails and light shafts

There's a language in the sky
Am
There are bones

Hiding under the viaduct
C
Sweeping down by the railway line
G
Making wagers with the day
Am
There's a rumour
F
Dirty as a chimney stack
C
Quiet as roadkill
G
On the northbound carriageway
F
And who's gonna raise a hand
G
When all we were taught to do was dance
F
Who'll be able to stand after this avalanche

Am F C G (2 times)

Am
Well they sold you
F
Back your outrage
C
In a neat little shrink-wrap
G
And a beautiful face
Am
And you think
F
That you've found your purpose
C
While they've been trailing the breadcrumbs
G
Of a watertight case
Am
So you're shouting
F
But you're shouting softly
C
So no-one can hear you
G
And get the wrong idea
Am
But behind
F
The closing eye of the tabloids
C
We will be waiting

And we'll say it clear

Cos who's gonna raise a hand

When all we were taught to do was dance

Cherry Vid - Violence by Rose Kemp

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/14/07
Rose KempRose Kemp -- one of the most amazing talents of our time.

Sometimes she's a really big firecracker in a very small box. Other times she's a comrade in mourning.

She can sing sweet and gentle or she can take out an eye with a word.

And she wields her axe with aptitude -- exactly how she handles her voice. One minute picking out beauty in a choice progression and the next minute stomping on fuzz.

She's everything I ever wanted in a rock diva.

Two very talented people, musician / visual artist Frànçois and musician Rozi Plain (who obviously has her hands in visual arts as well), put together this stop motion animated video for Rose Kemp's song Violence. The result is a beautiful eye and mind opening amalgam of three amazing individuals.

Enjoy.

Violence by Rose Kemp
Video by Frànçois & Rozi Plain

Nothing but the ticking of the clocks
The slamming of the stocks
Nothing but the silence on the street
Where we were meant to meet
There's nothing else to find here

Listen to the witness in the dock
The turning of the lock
You don't know why you're still alone
But the intimacy shown
Is enough to make me certain

The stupidest thing I've ever done
But it was so much fun

Nothing like the setting of the sun
When day had just begun
You left me silent by the phone
And I didn't like the tone
You quickly said goodbye with
Your chilling heartless undertones of choice
The weapons in your voice
They leave me feeling empty
They leave me hollow to the core
Like I couldn't fail anymore
Even if I tried to

Two three four

So I pick up the blankets
The daylight is fading
When I've only just managed to raise my head
So I draw back the curtains
It's six in the evening
And I've only just got the courage to get out
of bed
Nothing is right in my head
Nothing is clear in my heart
I feel like my body is dead
The day doesn't have to start here

Voices to Live and Die by - Jessica Irvine

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/08/07

Jessica IrvineOkay, so what exactly do I mean when I say "Voices to Live and Die by"? (besides showing off my poor grammar)

I mean that there are some voices that impart to the listener such a sense of the 'beauty in humanity' that when you hear them you're struck so hard that it knocks everything but the innocence right out of you. The tarnish is lifted -- everything reflects and you're overcome with a gladness to be alive. And at that very instant you know that if you were dying it would be okay because you're so filled with rapture that surely it will follow you to where you're heading and you'll defy the adage -- you will not "die alone".

has a voice to live and die by. She's also an exceptionally talented composer. I've heard her range from a fusion of pop and hip-hop (sans rap) to some experimental styles that defy my explanation. I personally prefer the more pop oriented Irvine but damn -- with a voice like that she could sing any style and it would bring a smile to my face.

I know very little else about her. At her website she mentions a desire to put out an album. I would gladly wait an eternity for that. Hopefully she won't and will find a way to work it out much sooner.

Stop by her myspace profile and listen to her and let her know what you think.

Finally, is this one of the coolest and most inspiring images you've ever seen!?

Ivy York -- Ivy York

by Frank Gualtier -- 08/20/06, 08/27/06, 08/14/06

Ivy YorkBuy the CD

Soften the lights, turn up the volume, and put away that book.

Ivy York's highly anticipated self titled debut album is finally here and tapping at your window. It wants in and it wants to play.

If you put on some cocoa I'll tell you what to expect when you peel off the wrapper and open it up.

Within this LP lies a collection of satin lace emotive songs with a retro vibe sandwiched between a dreamy breathing intro that glides into your chest and snuggles like a comforter around your heart and an unlisted and equally dreamy outro on keys that gently weans you off the narcotically euphoric beauty of all you've just experienced. Long enough at least to catch a breath before you find yourself hopelessly in love and diving back in again and again...

At the risk of being arrested by the 'redundant word usage police' I think the best single word descriptor for both Ivy's voice and the music she writes is 'dreamy'. It works both as a literal and for it's retro usage connotations. Her pipes are harmonically rich with a smokiness that colors the high end in a way that verges on bubbly. Through this amazing instrument she channels the contents of her open heart and a worlds worth of identifiable emotion.

Depending on who you're with (or not with) you'll laugh, you'll cry, you'll find visions of memories not yet made and those now distant. If you don't like music in your head or in your heart you are in eminent danger of feeling something -- apply your safety gear now and step back behind the blue line.

The primary sound is that of a four piece band with piano -- retro "oohs" and "ahs" included. And while the music can really kick a beat at times it's never harsh. Two things I especially like are the extra emphasis on acoustic guitar relative to what I've heard on previous Ivy York demos and the use of more synth in a smartly musical manner which yields just a hint of a vibe at times. At other times it suspends a tension that drives the music deep inside -- it's almost as if it's issuing from you rather than to you.

As is always the case with Ivy York the production is sublime and exhibits skill in console continuity mastering that in and of itself is a work of art.

This album is breathtaking start to finish -- an emotive masterpiece of retro rock made fresh by the truly unique sound of Ivy York. Two thumbs up to a work that far exceeded my high expectations.

Mooli

by Frank Gualtier -- 05/20/06, 06/17/06

Mooli -- Clea LlewellynMooli blends the talents of Clea Llewellyn and Ben Copland into rich trip-hop beat and groove driven music sans the drizzle and thunder of gothic tears and arrows (...of outrageous fortune...) often associated with this and like genre.

Of Clea's voice it might be said they broke the mold. Rich and laden with breath and smoke it drives Mooli in a soulful manner. I'm fanatic for technicals so I get an extra win listening to her perfect vibrato and it's unimperiously masterful execution.

Their One Design EP is a Limited Edition of extremely low issue and no plans for replication. Better get this while you still can.

They are currently working on their debut full length album Concubine and are in the midst of works for the video 'Save You' which is currently slated for release later this summer of 2006.

For more information visit their website and check out their forum.

If you want sneak previews of Concubine in glorious high sample bit rate sound you can download 'San Francisco Rain' from TuneTribe.com

Ivy York

by Frank Gualtier -- 05/08/06, 06/17/06, 08/14/07

Ivy YorkIvy York is the latest thing that's been on my mind and in my iPod. I'm always drawn to a nice voice and hers grabbed me like a magnet.

She has shades of Christina Amphlett (Divinyls) forged into the upper registers of something like an Ambrosia Parsley (Shivaree). How she manages to keep such a potential powder keg of sugar south of the saccharine zone is beyond me but she does and it's breathtaking -- no insulin required.

I personally shy away from cover bands but had read that Ivy and bandmate Ravi Panesar wrote their own music. To be sure I asked Ivy herself and was told -- "yes we do write and produce all of our own material". That's all I had to hear.

My favorite IY song is 'In Your Arms', a really warm and highly danceable strut that sort of takes me back to the 60's-70's. Despite the oohs and ahs and guitar fills, it doesn't sound overly retro to me. Perhaps just retro enough. I can see why they're sometimes compared to 'The Cardigans' but I would add - "without the jagged edges."

The song 'Whatever Happened' has a rich rounding sound almost reminiscent of a leslie at times and is colored with the equal spritz of sometimes-sad and always dreamy vivacity that permeates all their music.

All tracks I've heard could readily sprout those lover's "this is our song" legs on both warm sunny beach getaways and dead of winter ski lodge retreats.

Finally, these are all exceptional mixes. You hear nothing but the dreamy heartfelt music and vocals of Ivy York.

Check Ivy York out on myspace and her website.

You'll be able to download songs and I believe she even has a disc available upon request.

UPDATE -- I finally took a gander at Ivy York -- The In Your Arms video and was sorry I waited.

If you thought the song was addictive and endearing and made you ache for that someone special then the video will snap you like a twig. You're thinking, what could be better than hearing Ivy sing `I love you`? I'll tell you what could be better -- Watching Ivy sing `I love you` right in your face !*swoon*! So go check it out and bring snacks because you'll want to keep checking it out. Over and over and over...

On a more technical note the quality is stunning. At full screen it looks sharp as DVD to me and the sound is on par.

Don't wait like I did -- this is one trip you will not regret.
